Post Action

Beijing, China

The tension is thick. The senses are overwhelmed. The sound of dogs barking and whining and people arguing. The smell of urine, feces, and exhaust fumes overtake you. Adrenalin races in the veins awaiting the decision of the slaughterman of whether to give up the dogs or risk police.

Everyone is anxious and confused, including the dogs.

The sight of them stuffed in cages, one on top of another, suffering, unable to breathe, some with injuries crying in pain. All you want to do is rush to free them. But, you must wait for the slaughterman to fold his hand and walk away.

What elation when the slaughterman relents and gives up the dogs. For animal lovers, DMT Actions are a rollercoaster ride of emotions. At the end, everyone breathes a sigh of relief. But, that is just the beginning.

The real work begins after the dogs are rescued.

Many have suffered injury like broken bones or cuts. Some are dehydrated and having trouble breathing. You must move them to safety right away. Triage the hurt ones, transport them to the vet, and settle in the healthier ones to their new shelter where they can be fed and watered.

Many of them have wire around their necks that needs to be cut off with wire cutters. The slaughtermen use the wire like a collar to move them or flip them into a crate with a big wire hook. Many suffer deep lacerations from this barbaric practice.

Many of these dogs were stolen from yards and are psychologically traumatized, others are strays that are poorly socialized and have to be handled carefully. Many have communicable diseases and need to be tested for viruses.

Most of them are not spayed or neutered, so they must be separated by gender before they can finally settle into the kennel. Then, and only then, can they begin to feel safe.

The call.

WOA Foundation, with local partners, sponsored a call to action to rescue over 130 dogs from a dog meat trade truck in Beijing. All dogs have been safely sent to our partner shelters or adopted, locally.

The rescue is just the beginning of the care these poor dogs need to continue a decent life. Winter is on it's way to China and word is it will be one of the coldest on record this year.

Please consider helping us feed these dogs who were so close to being used as food themselves.
