A Place of Our Own PT3

Part 3

Beijing, China

So many had arrived sick or injured.

Our rapid-fire, emergency response to Grandpa’s and Lijie’s shelters left us in a triage situation. Many of the dogs were sick or injured and had to be taken to the hospital.

Most of the dogs were settled in nicely. We even added Shunjie’s dogs to the family. This took us to a total population of 200 dogs. These dogs, saved from the death sentence of imminent government impoundment and very poor living conditions, were introduced to an upgrade in living conditions. They enjoy a clean, safe environment with indoor heat and beds, play and enrichment, and nutritious food. They are happy in their small family packs and visits with humans.

But, shelter life is never ideal, especially when you are sick or injured.

WOA Foundation had long ago discussed renting a house to transition dogs for adoption in the USA. They would learn the skills expected of them by their adopted families like leash walking, potty training, and general house manners. We would also be able to identify any potential behavior issues and personality traits about which we could inform prospective adopters.

It was perfect timing.

It seemed the right time to rent a house for the recovering dogs coming from the hospital and the dogs being made ready for adoption. So we procured a house near the shelter and hired a couple to care for 20 dogs living there. We wanted to have 30, but the landlord said no. We are still working on him!

It didn’t take long for the dogs to make this place their home.

It functions like a regular household at the pace of life. Ling Ling, our worker, and her husband occupy one bedroom and the dogs sleep in the other bedrooms. Their meals are made in the kitchen, they have playtime inside and outside in the courtyard, and lots of affection from the couple and their visitors.

We are so proud of this effort and so thankful you are a part of this story. If you can help us with our new plans, please donate. We need your help to care for these dogs and to get them adopted in the USA. Please join us in the fight against the animal crisis in China.
