SANCTUARIES

“A hero is an individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of obstacles.''

CURRENT PARTNERS

The organizations that we choose to partner with have demonstrated a community-centered approach, excellent financial reporting and a deep knowledge of water project implementation. They are some of the best in the world at bringing clean water to people in need. These are the partners that charity: water currently funds.

THE CHALLENGES

Although China currently has at least 60 million homeless dogs, surprisingly there are no government-funded shelter systems, or Humane Society in China.  Sadly, these vulnerable animals are constantly under threat from the dog meat trade and police culling.

Thankfully, there are heroes that stand up for these animals, including our sanctuary partners. These extraordinary people, rescue homeless dogs from the streets, and protect them from abuse and death in safe haven.

Sanctuary founders face unimaginable challenges every day.  Often operating at a 1 person to 100 dogs ratio because of a lack of staffing resources, they also must often fund the sanctuaries on their own and have barely enough money for daily expenses like feeding the dogs, much less for emergencies, such as fixing a leaky roof or urgent medical treatment for a rescued dog.

Despite the hardships, their love for these dogs keeps them going.  Some of them have sold their own home to keep the sanctuary open, others have been abandoned by their families, or suffer serious health issues, but nothing will make them give up.

FAQ

+ Why we work with local partners in China?

We know that funding and supporting local sanctuaries is the most effective way to create long term impact. Our partners have years of experience rescuing homeless dogs in their communities. While WOA is raising awareness and funds, our partners are on the front lines, rescuing and caring for hundreds of dogs every day.

+ How we choose our partners?

We believe that the combination of sheer determination, passion, and years of rescue experience is the key to our success. To become a WOA partner, a sanctuary must be operating for at least 10 years.

+ How we work with our partners?

Without our partners, our vision would not be possible. Our team communicates with our partners every day, to set goals set, track progress and work through challenges that come up.

+ What we expect from our partners?

We work with partners who share our vision of ending the suffering of homeless dogs in China. We establish operational guidelines with our partners so that we can maximize our ability to rescue dogs and support them in sanctuaries.
