Gong Ping manages three sanctuaries while working full time to support himself.
As with many sanctuary operators in China, the funding they get is far from enough, usually they have to work to support themselves and the dogs. It is no different for Gong Ping. This leaves him with no personal time. Imagine going at it with no break for ten years!
Rescuing dogs has gotten him into personal debt often.
Over the course of a ten year period, Gong Ping has gotten into personal debt many times in order to save dogs from the slaughterhouse or whenever they don’t have enough money for kibbles. He feels personally responsible for the lives of animals in all three sanctuaries. When the stress becomes unbearable, he will ride his red motorcycle in an open field, with the music blaring, to get it out of his system.
Gong Ping looks forward to an animal protection law becoming enacted
Living in Shenyang, where the dog meat trade is rampant, it is really hard for an animal activist to witness the cruelty first hand over and over again. It is like living in a war zone. Dog meat restaurants are popular in this area of China. Gong Ping prays the law will pass soon that will make the dog meat trade illegal and that people who abuse and abandon animals will be prosecuted and jailed.
